THESE FOUR youngsters were our fire chiefs for the day recently, getting a chance to par- ticipate in events that included a ride on one of the new fire boats positioned in the Vancouver herbor. With the pint-sized chiefs are (from left) Karl Barth of the Lions Bay Fire Department, West Vancouver firefighter Dan Steinbart, and Dave Burgess and Terry Abrams of North Vancouver City and District, respectively. The chiefs were picked up at school by a fire truck, then taken to meet their municipal mayor, given a fire hall tour, had lunch at McDonald's, and saw a movie at CN Imax; as well as getting to ride on the fire beat. The North Vancouver District chief got an extra treat of a helicopter ride. Export of yew needles and boughs approved . THE PROVINCE has authorized the limited export of Pacific yew needles and boughs to be used to produce Taxol, the promising cancer-fighting drug, Forests Minister Dan Miller announced recently. Miller said the use of yew nee- dies and boughs from the province will support international research on this drug. B.C. researchers and patients are currently involved in clinica! trials using Taxol. ‘Highland Forest Products Ltd. of Powell River can. export the needles and the boughs only until the end of the year,”’ Miller said. The intended customer is NaPro, of Boulder, Colorado, which has facilities to use the ma- terial. “‘Highland currently supplies yew bark to the Richmond-based Towers Phytochemicats Ltd., but the B.C. processing company will not be able to use the yew needles and boughs ait its proposed plant on Annacis Island in Delta because this material requires a different extraction method,’’ Miller said. . “We now have the opportunity to use the yew needles and boughs which are, at present, being ‘destroyed in the post-harvest treatment of harvested sites. We're restricting the collection of this material to areas scheduled for harvesting,’’ the minister said. While the concentration of Taxol in the needles and boughs is fower than in bark, they are still desirable sources of this potential- ly valuable drug, which is being used in research trials for treating ovarian and breast cancer. Because the Taxol production capability of yew diminishes after harvesting, storing the materia! is not a viable alternative. “Tam in faver of our resources being processed in British Colum- bia,’’ said Miller. ‘‘However, until a facility in our province is able to use needles and boughs, exporting this material is the only way to support this important cancer research.” The Pacific yew tree is relatively rare and is found only in 8.C., Washington State, Oregon and northern California. or most retailers, manufacturer's cooperative = od advertising programs represent the best way to gain more visibility and to sell more products hile keeping advertising costs to a minimum.
