* breast 14 - Sunday, October 20, 1991 - North Shore News Free public forum focuses on breast health and cancer THE CANADIAN Cancer Society and the Screening Mammography Program of B.C. are hosting a free public forum called Breast Health for Life. Held 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 22 at the Robson Square Conference Centre, the forum panellists in- clude several specialists in breast health and cancer. The forum will be moderated by CBC anchor Kevin Evans, the honorary campaign chairman for the Canadian Cancer Society. A free educational seminar will also be held on Oct. 28 at 5:30 p.m. at the YWCA, 580 Burrard St Seminar presenters include Ca- nadian Cancer Society volunteers, Dr. Denise Werker, a community health physician, and Sheila King of the Screening Mammography Program of B.C. This informal seminar will p7zo- vide women of all ages an oppor- tunity to learn about early detec- tion and to ask questions. The forum and seminar are purt of the Canadian Cancer Society's campaign to raise awareness of cancer during ‘‘breast ‘health month’’ in October. The Canadian Cancer Society encourages women to monitor their breast health by monthly self-examinations, annual breast examinations by a physician, and, if 40 or over, an annual mam- mogram. This year in B.C., an estimated 2,200 women will discover they have breast cancer. Breast cancer may account for 580 deaths in B.C. this year, or 18% of all fe- male cancer deaths in the pro- vince.
