A veteran of the stage, the blue-eyed Barber has hardly ever been without work curing the past 10 years — a rarity «n her transient ’ profession. In 7983 alone she starred in five plays (as Marlene in Top Girls — her most challenging role -- and as Titiana in A Midsummer Night ‘s Dream, to name just two). Hay Feveris her first stage per- formance since Anury Housewives. Unlike the one-toned women she has portrayed in the past, Barber says playing Myra is a challenge because of the charac- ter’s multi-levels. Two years ago Barber gave birth to a baby girl and has become increasingly involved with the world ot film. Although she has !anded numerous principal roles in such T.V shows as Wiseguy, Bordertown, Danger Bay and 27 jump Street, she admits the last two years have been par- ticularly tough for women actors in Vancouver. “Most plays and T.V. shows centre around men — women ac- tors usually end up playing SECTELaTIES, NUESES OF NSTresses, ” she says. With Matinee, however, Barber seems to have gotten her re. cnge. In the film, it isa woman who stalks and murders her victims by night. As a mother, Barber says she completely understands her char- acter’s killing impulse. “She's a repressed mother who works as a projectionist at a local theatre. She’s schizophrenic and only kills the people who threaten her family. | had just had my child when | got the part, and so | could completely understand the char- acter’s raison d'etre,” Barber is hopeful that Matinee, due out soon on home video and Pay T.V., will strengthen her film career. She and a group of fellow actors have just formed a film production company called We're Reely Sorry Productions. She's also trying to sell a script she co-wrote for a new TLV, sitcom series. Eventually, Barber would like to be producing, directing and acting in her own films, CLASSES 1765 Marine Drive West Vancouver, B.C. V7V¥ 135 Telephone: (604) 926-9512 GASTOWN 15 WATER ST.
