E nailbox Cut down on noise of garbage trucks Dear Editor: On behalf of many other senior citizens who live in the area of Bellevue Avenue, 2}st and 22nd Streets, | would like to thank the District of West Vancouver, for altering the schedule of the garbage col- lection from the ungodly hour of 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Now, if a man were to be sent around with a drill, bolts, and sections of old tires to bolt these sections to the apartment garbage con- tainer lids in the apropriate places, much of the clangorous noise produced whilst handling these con- tainers would be eliminated. Preventive programs SAVE taxes Dear Editor: The West Vancouver Council on the careful con- sidered advice of the Com- munity Services Advisory Commission pointed out to the Provincial Government and its Ministers that they were abolishing programs that were preventative. This while giving short term sav- ings invariably leads to higher future costs. 1 believe this is sound advice and ap- propriate to the interests of our taxpayers to protect them from long term liabilities as both municipal and provin cial taxpayers. Your Editorial of Sunday Oct. 9, 1983, suggesting that West Vancouver’s Council 1s merely echoing the protests of ‘Operation Sohdarity”’ does us a disservice, displays your shallow examination of what was being said and decreases our chance of hav ing the Provincial Govern ment tecogmize that cutting preventive programs is equal ty as bad as deficit financing In most cases Donald Csriffiths Alderman West Vancouver Also, consideration should be given to including the following two points into the specifications of the garbage collection contract: (a) that the garbage trucks be equipped with effective muf- flers (70 dB); (b) if two or more companies are given the contract, their areas for collection should not overlap. With regards to (b), it is in- efficient to have two dif- ferent garbage collectors covering the same area and also, this practice adds to the noise pollution. J.W. Booth, West Vancouver. Dear Editor: The interview conducted by Noel Wright (North Shore News, Oct. 2) with a representative of a new group to sponsor trustee candidates contains a statement on education spending that must be corrected. The quote ‘TAGG has said cut at any cost’’ is absolute nonsense. No representative of TAGG (Taxpayers Association for Good Government) has made such a ridiculous statement and the credibility of this new group (CARE) must be seriously questioned regar- ding this and other implica- tions from the interview. Many world teaders recognize that action by free enterprise can help resolve the financial downturn facing us. TAGG stands for good Sue invited again! Dear Editor: As a long-time member and former chairperson of the North Shore Women's Centre I object to Sue Cook’s Suggestion (letter to the editor, October 9) that her right-wing views would make her unwelcome at the Women’s Centre. We have a diverse membership represen- ting the political spectrum. All our members share a common conviction: that equal opportunities for both men and women will con- tribute {tO a progressive society. A major percentage of our volunteers’ and coordinator’s time in the past year has been devoted to the pornography issue. helping to raise the public’s awareness about the distribution and availability of hard-core pornography depicting scenes of violence, rape and incest. The NSWC co-sponsored a Conference on Pornography and Public Safety with the Justice In sututle in September We also sponsored a summer student project which involved tesearching available por- nography in our community Women's Night on our local Cable 101s broadcast at three different times during the month Topics range from daycare lo pensions bo technological change in the FINANCIAL SERVICES & RETIREMENT PLANNING Bert Wiehham ride CErUV Avis Laphawz A | l Yours one atop Mnaaetal nervtee comtre for © Tecan De proomitn © KKND a Anenettten | Ma ginte red Me tire ane ot Lave came Canada Savtngn Boon” baat (MEER wm) * PF vevenere Daal pobaertong, fore vce thee se nt workplace. ] would suggest to Sue Cook that laudable programs such as post-partum counsell- ing, legal aid for deserted mothers, help for sexually abused children and transi- tion houses for battered women, are not supported only by left-wing radicals. As a member of the North Shore Women’s Centre, | invite Sue again to drop in at the Centre — to meet with us and to discuss our common _ con- cerns for a better society. Nerys Blown North Vancouver government and reasonable solutions to problems, not confrontation which is not only non-productive but time-consuming and expen- sive. Why are some groups so upset with government restraint? Surely this helps to reduce the heavy burden of taxation on everyone?
