Maureen is the president of the
North Shore Crisis Services Centre
under which the Emily Murphy
House operates on the North Shore.
She received the cheque from Park
Royal’s Rick Amantea on behalf
of the Larco Group of Companies,
the Park Royal Theatres, the shop-
ping centre and the merchants.

That's just the start of the good
news to raise half a million dollars
for the Emily Murphy House
“Make Room” campaign. On each
of the next three Sundays the Park
Royal Theatres are running kids*
matinees with al) of the $4 admis-
sion going to the charity. The
mayor and councillors all praised
Shiraz Lalji and members of the
Larco Group as well as our publish-
er Peter Speck and the North
Shore News for their support...

The Playhouse Theatre's major
fundraiser. the Vancouver
Tnternational Wine Festival kicked
off with the gala 16th annual
Bacehimalia Wine Festival Dinner
and Auction at the Hotel Vancouver
last week. The affair saw such wine
lovers as urtist Toni Onley,
Michael Horsey, the Shiraz Lalji
family, Bruno Gerussi and Nancy
Morrison, Phi! Boname and his
young daughter Mary, Richard
Carras and Daryl Weinbren,
South Africa’s Neil van Staden,
hotelier Michael Kaile, Don and
Evelyn Decotiis and Bryan Adam's
talent agent, Bruce Allen and his
lovely wife Jane McDougall. all
sipping, supping and bidding. Actor
Stephen Miller was an excellent
emcee while Leanne Campbell did
a great job of publicizing the event.

Saturday the spacious ballroom
of Mark Andrew's Hyatt Regency
was packed with more than 700 of
the town’s glitziest citizens in
medals and decorations, swirling
red capes, sequins and satins, tafetta
and velvets. This was the celebra-
tion for the Sovereign Order of St.
John of Jerusalem, an order estab-
lished in Europe more than {.000
years ago. Special guest was
H.R.H. Princess Elizabeth of
Yugoslavia, the 57-year old mem-
ber of the exiled Serbian Royal
family and Grand Dame of the
order. She lives in New York and
founded the Princess Elizabeti
Foundation in [990 to aid the vic-
tims of the war in Yugoslavia.

The Festive Spring Ball was to
raise funds for her charity, for the
Palliative Care Hospitals in B.C.
and for the St. Paul's Hospital
Foundation, Chairman of the Grand
Ball was publisher Peter Legge
who was on hand as 19 gentlemen
were invested into the order of St.
John at a ceremony at Christ
Church Cathedrat ... The president
of Calona Wines, lan Tostenson
and his wife Cathy donated a
Methuselah of Calona’s Artists
Reserve Chardonnay which was
autographed in gold by the Princess
and auctioned later in the evening.

Mira Polak, who flew in from
Yugoslavia to cover the event, is a
news anchor in Europe and is also
the correspondent for Majesty mag-
azine which covers the doings of

the royal types around the world. I
had a great time sitting with the
hotel GME Mark Andrew and his
attractive wife Kristi, Joy and
David Motion and new Hyatt PR
Margaret Haller. That dashing
rogue, the 92-year-old Consul
General for Monaco, Frits Ziegler
is the Grand Prior of the order and
wus a big hit with the ladies, How
does this senior citizen keep in such
robust health? It’s two martinis and
an aspirin every day.

Also chatted with the Consul for
Luxembourg Klaus Priehe and his
wife Mary, who looked fantastic in
glearning green satin; Emerson and
Fran Short, Senator Ray Perrault
and his wife Barbara, Harbour
Ferries’ Graeme Clarke, whose
wife Elise had her gown acce:
sorized by a black sling on her left
arm after injuring it ina recent fall,
