North Vancouver 24-HOUR RELAY WHILE YOU slept last night, almost 2,000 people were running around the track and surrounding park at Swangard Stadium. The Labatt’s 24-hour relay continues until 10 a.m. today, and when it’s over the 80 teams entered will hopefully have raised more than last year's total of $161,000 for the B.C. Lions Society for Crippled Children. Ten of the teams involved are based on the North Shore, and many more runners are from this side of the harbour. Not al! of the participants in the relay, which has teams trying to cover the most distance in 24 hours, are runners. One of the North Shore teams, Stafford’s Antiques. is composed of soccer players trying to keep up their fitness level. The relay was an ad- ditional fitness activity, since the team had also joined a softball league for the summer to keep in shape. “We felt training for the_ run would keep our mem- bers in shape as well as being a good way to work as a group to raise funds for the B.C. Society for Crippled Children,”” said team representative lan Wragg. He said the team’s target is to raise $3,000, of which 1981 1981 Mazda 626 Horizon H.B. 4 Door - Automatic 4 Door - Automatic $ 00 $ 00 | 8995. 5995. | 1981 1981 | Pontiac Acadian Sapporo PLUS ALL COUT SE FO VE RUC LES OUR SALES DEPT $2.500 has already been pledged. The large North Shore turnout contnbuted in part to the record number of participants this year m the 24-hour relay. A new twist in this year’s N.S. teams running event will be the team en- tered and running in Whitehorse. The team will be in hourly contact with the Swangard headquarters and will appear on the scoreboard with the other 79 teams. Al Howie will also be tegistered again this year and will attempt to break the world record of 187 miles run by a single individual over a 24-hour period.
