And Karl Begrich is very much aware of that sea dream escape mechanism. A former boat builder and designer who once wrote a sailing column in the NEWS. Begrich turned to film- making and has been creating fuel for the escape dream for a number of years with his sailing documen- taries. His latest effort, Gone Sailing, is a full color multi- ple soundtrack motion pic- ture about the yearning in all of us to get away from our civilized routine. The film records boat building, racing, and cruis- By ANDY FRASER ing with some spectacular footage from the top of a 195 foot mast in galeforce winds, plus a rescue attempt of a yacht. There is a story line to the film. A landlubber turned sailor dreams of being a part of a Tall Ship celebration and to sail on a giant square- rigger. The film was shot in the Gulf Islands and in the Pacific aboard the US coast- guard squarerigger Eagle. Begrich trained as a film- maker in Vancouver and Los SAIL SECTION WOMEN - FOOD TRAVEL Angeles and has sailed the Pacific for the past ten.years. He started to combine his talents as sailor/filmmaker in his first documentary film, Escape Under Sail, a South Pacific adventure which has successfully toured major theatres throughout North America. Gone Sailing has been three years in production and planhing and it will be shown one night only, February 21, at the North Van Centennial Theatre at 8 p.m. Tickets are available from the Theatre, and Vancouver Ticket Centre and Eatons.
