Delvin a | n 0 In Cape Breton Some of the early settlers of Cape Breton were French, referred to as “Acadians.” The British weren't getting along so well with the French about this time—back in the 18th century—and hounded these people -un- mercifully until the majority of them returned to France. From France, many of the Acadians returned to North America but gave British territory a wide berth. They settled in the then-French Louisianna Territory and became the famous “Cajuns.” Of the few Acadians who were left when the British got through harassing them, many settled in the BEACHED BOAT in beautiful Cape Breton. The residents slip easily from French to English and . have preserved many of the traditions of the early set- tlers. It is a matter of pride that each year many American “Cajuns” come for a holiday and to chase down “roots.” If you're lucky, the Cheticamp Co-op Museum and Restaurant will be open serving some of the traditional dishes such as Rapé Pie, potato pancakes and chicken stew, all well cooked by local housewives and priced LOW. To my untrained ear, the French spoken by the “Acadians” is more guttural than that spoken in Montreal but it would be a lot of fun for someone who is fluent to go and listen. One distinctive Canadian craft is practiced widely in the small community—the unique “Cheticamp Hooked Rugs” are made by many groups of “hookers” and sold everywhere. The rugs are lovely — mostly floral patterns in pastel shades of green, blue. pink, yellow and beige. I watched some of the craftspeople at work, and it's a whole different approach from my own hobby of latch-hooking. The yarn is fed into a. burlap backing from underneath and poked through with a small hook. They work in circles instead of rows as this is said to give more strength to the finished product. - If you want to buy a rug, bring plenty’ of money! I intend to return some day, take some lessons and make my own. Unfortunately, . “La Cuisine de Cheticamp” (copyright 1980, Imprimerie Nordet Ltee. Cheticamp, N.S.) isn't very well written. It was the result of a youth employment program in co- operation with the ladies of the community. I've not yet figured out just how much salt it takes to “float an egg,” and when I'm told to “add soda” to ‘cooking water, it doesn’t hurt to know if T should be thinking about a Cadians teaspoon or a fistful! I'm told that a number of “Cajun” women have bought the book and taken it home to Louisianna. Maybe they know something I don't. Next: South from Halifax and I find the ultimate fish chowder.
