A20:Wednesday, August 27, 1980 - North Shore News Officials warn of ‘super disaster’ Shanghai threatened PEKING (UPI) - A “super disaster” threatens China's largest city of Shanghai with a simultaneous onslaught of overflowing rivers, ab- normally high sea tides and a typhoon, official reports said Friday. City authorities have ordered the urgent mobilization of Shanghai's it mithon people along with troops stationed in the city to “prepare for the fight against a super disaster and protect people's lives and property.” Shanghai is situated on China’s eastern seaboard at the mouth of the mighty Yangtze River, the nation’s longest. The Yangtze has been swollen by heavy summer rains and wide areas upriver have already been flooded, causing heavy losses in lives and crops. “The alarming state of the river poses a major threat to ‘the lower reaches of the river,” said the official warnings carried by two Shanghai newspapers, the Jiefang Ribao and Wen Hui Bao. The warnings said the Meteorological Department has predicted a typhoon will hit Shanghai sometime between late August and mid-September. “A real possibility exists that Shanghai will be hit all at once by the river flood, typhoon, torrential rains and a big tide,” said Wang Deming, deputy director of the Shangha:r Anti-Flood Control Center. “Shanghai will suffer an extremely senous disaster,” if the ominous predictions come true, he said. Wang said experts ex- pected a major flood period for the Yangtze comparable to the 1954 disaster when the Yangtze, Hwai and Yellow rivers spilled over their banks. All signs - from studies of sunspot activity to periodical charts of flood years - point to a major overflow this year, the experts said. Shanghai has already been flooded once this month after heavy rains hit the thriving metropolis and at least five provinces upriver along the Yangtze have been inundated. Inked noses are a dead giveaway INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) - Cattle rustlers should think twice before stealing a cow in Indiana - its noseprint may give them away. Animal husbandry specialists involved in 4-H work have nose-printed or freeze-branded about 4,000 Hoosier steers this year, and they're thinking of ex- panding the program to dairy cattle. The methods can provide immediate identification of animals involved in per- formance and production testing. But the speciahsts hope the long-range effect will make 1 easier to breed better animals, and harder, for thieves to steal them. Noseprinting began in the 1920’s on dairy cattle, but the technique wasn't used much until a few years ago when some Southwestern States began to use the system to identify 4-H steers. “It's a method of iden- tification just like finger- prints,” said Kenneth MacDonald, an _ associate professor of animal sciences at Purdue University who 1s in charge of the new Indiana program “The nose does not change The configuration and arrangements of lines and dots on an animal's nose is yust hke our fingerpnnts ~ |RAD FLUSH iPECIA The NOR EST MICRO FLUSH cleaning system i the unly sate and sure way to thoroughly clean your Car 8 COOlIng system Flushing with plain water will only remove old coolant and loose particles of rust and scale Our 6 pom AMAL FL CiSet SPECIAL will heevigs pre vers overheating protolerin hari your Bummer driving ak atoona! cr ane core diticoes eorvik OG ty Call Jonn Lockwood Mon bre of 40) Opens Saturdays HOG 4 4 DRIVE-IN SERVICE $2498 PLUS PARTS 1978 Wearten st nV JUST OFF PEMBERTON 3 BLOCKS SOUTH OF MARINE Capilano Mall Watch for the return of Professor Penny-Pincher!
