THREE YEARS ago Don
Nimi wondered if he’d ever
race legally in the Lower
Mainland again.

In 1990, the. Westwood
Motorsport Park in Coquitlam
was plowed under to make room
for sprawling urban development.

But next week, Nimi, born and
raised in North Vancouver, will
climb into his state-of-the-art
Nissan 510 and take to the Van-
couver Indy circuit in the amateur
GT3 class.

“The last three years I’ve been
travelling to Oregon and Califor-
nia to race, so it’s going to be a
change to sleep in my own bed on
the night before a race,’’ said
Nimi.

Nimi is in his sophomore year
in the Nasport Pro Series, a six-
race series with races in Kent,
Washington; Portland, Oregon;
Sonoma, California; Monterey,
Cal.; and Rosamond, Cal.

Last season he was named
rookie of the year, with a 10th
place overall finish in the com-
petitive — and expensive — ama-
teur series.

“The thing about racing is that,
unlike say wrestling or tennis, you
need quite a lot of money just to
get your car and crew to the
track,’’ he said.

Nimi estimates the budget per
sace at close to $5,000, in addition
to tow vehicle expenses for the
six-series season of $20,000.

His team, PDM Racing, is
sponsored by Burnaby-based
Great West Paper Box, Tireland
Performance Centre of North
Vancouver, and Quaker State Inc.
of Burlington, Ontario.

Prior to last season’s debut in
the Nasport Pro Series, Nimi
steadily climbed up the racing
class ladder, starting with a 1986
B.C. Region D-Improved Class
championship in a Datsun 200 SX.

The following year he drove an
Austin Healey Sprite to both the
B.C. Region D-Street Class
championship title and the Cana-
dian National Autoslalom  D-
Street Prepared Class title. He
repeated as the D-Street champion
the following year.

In 1991, Nimi won the Knox
Mountain Hillclimb GT3 race, and
drove a Nissan 240 SX to the Ca-
nadian National Autoslalom C-
Stock championship. In the fall of
that year he purchased the one-
of-a-kind 1990 Nissan 510.

“The car was built in 1988 for a
guy in Surrey, who sold it to me
in 1991,’’ said Nimi, adding the
car has been featured in a number
of Nissan catalogs and calendars.

What makes the hard-to-miss
red, white, and blue race car so
unique is its full tube-frame and
fiberglass panels, making for a
light, strong ride.

Nimi pegs the replacement value
of the car at more than $75,000.

With the world’s best coming to
the Lower Mainland next week,
local boy Don Nimi can’t wait to
legally race around the streets of
downtown Vancouver at speeds
teaching 225 kilometres per hour
(140 mph).
